Auction Insights: turn competitor data into better decisions.
A practical framework for reading Google Ads Auction Insights—and converting impression share, overlap and ranking signals into smarter bids, budgets and creative.
See the market.
Act with precision.
Auction Insights shows how your Google Ads visibility compares with advertisers entering the same auctions. Used well, it turns competitive noise into a focused action plan.
The report can be viewed at campaign, ad-group or keyword level. The real value is not simply seeing who appears beside you—it is understanding where visibility changes, why it changes and whether responding will improve business results.
Auction Insights is a diagnostic tool, not a scoreboard. Always connect competitive signals to conversions, profitability and strategic value.
Understand the six core metrics
Each metric answers a different competitive question. Read them together to avoid making decisions from one isolated percentage.
Impression share
The share of eligible impressions your ads actually received.
Overlap rate
How often another advertiser received an impression when you did too.
Position above rate
How often a competitor ranked above you when both ads appeared.
Top of page rate
How often an ad appeared above the organic search results.
Absolute top rate
How often an ad occupied the first ad position on the page.
Outranking share
How often you ranked above a competitor—or appeared when they did not.

Turn insight into campaign strategy
Know your real competitors
Use overlap rate to find advertisers repeatedly entering the same auctions—not just the brands you expect to see.
Improve keyword relevance
Unexpected competitors can signal broad or poorly matched queries. Tighten targeting where auction participation does not reflect user intent.
Prioritise valuable auctions
Use position-above and top-of-page rates to guide bids on high-value terms instead of increasing bids across the board.
Strengthen ad quality
Low visibility despite competitive bids can point to relevance, click-through-rate or landing-page experience issues.
Move budget with purpose
Invest where performance is strong and impression-share headroom exists. Reconsider areas where competing is inefficient.
Find new opportunities
Analyse location, device and time segments to uncover pockets of demand or weaker competitive pressure.
Use advanced analysis to find the why
Segment the data
Break performance down by time, device or location. Aggregate numbers can hide the exact auctions where the competitive picture changes.
Track seasonality
Compare consistent periods to distinguish a structural competitor move from a temporary promotion or seasonal surge.
Connect outcomes
Read Auction Insights beside conversion rate, cost per acquisition and return on ad spend before acting.
A practical review routine
- Define the campaign, market and date range before comparing advertisers.
- Identify the competitive change: visibility, overlap, page position or outranking.
- Check whether the same period shows a meaningful change in conversions or profitability.
- Make one controlled adjustment to bids, budget, targeting, creative or landing-page experience.
- Review the result after enough data accumulates, then keep, refine or reverse the change.
The strongest Auction Insights decisions protect profitable visibility—not visibility at any cost.
Competitive pressure changes constantly. Review the report regularly, but resist reacting to every fluctuation. A disciplined process keeps the data useful and the campaign aligned with commercial goals.
