I visited Brazil—and one number changed my perspective.

Brazil’s digital scale is impressive. But the most useful lesson lies in how differently people search, browse and discover brands compared with a mature European market like Belgium.

14×Larger population than Belgium

During a recent trip to Rio de Janeiro, one figure immediately stood out: Brazil has 171.32 million internet users.

That makes Brazil the fifth-largest connected population in the world and the largest digital market in Latin America. With more than 213 million inhabitants, its population is over fourteen times the size of Belgium’s.

For brands, creators, e-commerce businesses and digital marketers, that scale represents significant opportunity. Yet size alone does not explain how the market works. Search habits, platform preferences and browser usage reveal a digital ecosystem with its own logic.

A global strategy cannot simply be translated. It must be adapted to the way each market searches, browses and makes decisions.

Search behaviour in Brazil shows a strong appetite for weather information. Statista reported that “Clima” was the country’s most searched Google query in 2024. Related terms such as “Tempo” and “Previsão do tempo” also ranked highly.

WhatsApp and WhatsApp Web also attract substantial search interest. This reflects the platform’s central place in Brazilian daily life—not only for conversation, but also for product discovery, customer service and commercial interactions.

A revealing contrast with Belgium

Belgium is much smaller, but it is one of Europe’s most connected markets. The figures cited in the original analysis show internet access rising from 73% in 2010 to 94.68% by the end of 2025.

Belgian search behaviour offers an interesting parallel. “Google” ranked as the country’s most popular Google query between July 2024 and June 2025, while “Weer”—the Dutch word for weather—ranked second.

Browser usage tells an even clearer story

The difference becomes more visible when browser market shares are compared. Chrome overwhelmingly dominates in Brazil, while Safari holds a far stronger position in Belgium.

🇧🇷 Brazil

Google Chrome80.8%

Safari6.93%

🇧🇪 Belgium

Google Chrome56.11%

Safari23.63%

These differences affect more than reporting dashboards. They influence how teams should test websites, prioritize device experiences, optimize loading performance and evaluate conversion journeys.

What this means for SEO and growth

Brazil’s scale, cultural diversity and distinctive digital habits make it a fascinating market. They also show why international SEO requires more than keyword translation.

  • Study the language people naturally use when they search—not only direct translations of global keywords.
  • Understand which platforms shape discovery and trust, particularly WhatsApp in the Brazilian ecosystem.
  • Test websites against the browsers, devices and connection conditions that dominate locally.
  • Adapt content formats and conversion paths to local expectations instead of importing a European playbook.

This trip made me even more curious about how people formulate queries in Brazil, which sources they trust, where brand discovery happens and how Google’s results differ from those in Belgium and the rest of Europe.

For international SEO and digital marketing professionals, Brazil is not simply a larger audience. It is a market that deserves its own research, strategy and user experience.
